Whale’s Dream emerged during the isolation of the pandemic in 2020, a period when I reflected deeply on home, identity, and the life I was building between Korea and Germany.
The flying whale became a symbol of longing, imagination, and the desire to move freely between two worlds. The two moons hidden in the painting reflect these parallel emotional landscapes — Korea, where my family lives, and Germany, where my daily life continues.
Although a whale cannot truly fly, the painting holds a quiet belief that distant dreams and unreachable places may still exist within us.

As the young whale grows, it begins to swim toward quieter and wider spaces beyond its parents.
Within a green landscape filled with lotus leaves, the three whales drift together without holding onto one another too tightly. Each moves through the world with their own rhythm, distance, and depth.
A small butterfly appearing before them suggests future encounters, relationships, and moments still waiting to arrive.
Toward places not yet reached, the young whale continues to move quietly within its own depths.

This painting was created for my son, who is running toward the door of the next world —
a mother’s warm prayer painted as light to guide his way.
The five whales soaring in the sky represent his closest friends, students at the Gymnasium in Germany, gathering strength through learning and preparing to open the door to their own future with courage.
Within the scene are small symbols of his favorite subjects and foods, and a carp — the emblem of success and perseverance. The “door to the next world” was inspired by a traditional Korean wooden gate, a passage between the familiar and the unknown.

Dear Friends reflects my life as a Korean mother living in Germany.
When I was younger, I was not afraid of challenges and was always curious about new experiences.
But after giving birth and raising my son far from home, I went through periods of fear, exhaustion, and uncertainty. Over time, as my health and strength slowly returned, I began to dream again and rediscovered the courage to move forward.
The floating whales drift through unfamiliar spaces carrying memories and hope, reflecting the quiet belief that even after difficult moments, we can still continue toward our dreams.

My Life between Korea and Germany
Even since I was young, I always wanted to leave Korea and know the big world. I have been living more than 25 years abroad in China and Germany. My life hasn’t always been joy, and I’ve always tried to find happiness in it.
I tried to express my home in Frankfurt and Kronberg, which is a major bases of my life in Germany.

In Korea, China, and Japan, the dragon is depicted as an imaginary animal with mysterious and powerful power that is a combination of snake, deer, carp, hawk, and tiger, and the dragon has symbolized the king.
Also, the clouds refer to the servants who help the king. It is said that only with the loyalty of clouds can a king prosper, and that in order for a dragon to ascend to the sky, it must raise clouds and make it rain, and rain makes all things grow. That's why they say they drew a dragon and a cloud together.

Eobyeonseongryeongdo (“The Fish Transforming into a Dragon”) is a traditional Minhwa motif depicting a carp biting a magic pearl and ascending to the heavens as a dragon.
It symbolizes perseverance, success, and the fulfillment of one’s aspirations after enduring many trials.
In this work, I reinterpreted the classic theme against a pink sky,
expressing a wish that the passion and dreams of all who strive may rise gently and brightly —
just like a carp transforming into a dragon amid warm light.

Frankfurt is my second home.
The first destination in Germany was Frankfurt, and it was also where I lived the longest during my 17-year life in Germany. Apple blossoms have bloomed in Bembel, the symbol of Frankfurt. There is a traditional Korean vase stand under the Bembel. As a Korean, I took root and blossomed in Frankfurt.

I never used to like Brezels. They tasted plain — just a bit of salt on a twist of dough.
But after ten years in Germany, they’ve somehow become the most comforting bread to me. Perhaps it means that my life has finally taken root here. To me, a Brezel now looks like the roots of a tree — firm, grounded, alive.
From those roots, I painted a banana tree sprouting anew — a symbol of revival life reborn.

From the tangled roots of a Brezel, a peony has finally blossomed. It feels as if the time has come for my life in Germany to bloom as well. Two lions hold the roots firmly — my husband and my son. Without their steadfast strength, I might never have taken root here.
The word Brezel is said to come from the Latin pretiola, meaning “little reward.”
During Lent, monks in southern Europe would give these twisted breads to children who recited their prayers well.
Now that my life has firmly taken root,
perhaps it is time to offer myself that pretiola — a small reward, shaped like a Brezel.

Two moons always rise on me.
I was born in Korea and live in Germany. So I coexist with two moons, that is, two worlds. It reminded me my 20s when I walked along the stone wall path of Deoksugung Palace (one of the "Five Grand Palaces" of the Joseon dynasty). Walking along the stone walls made me feel good. Fortunately, there are many stone walls in Kronberg, where I live. Even now, in 40s, I still dream while walking along the stone walls.
